Happy Heart Happy Home

Giving tired, forgotten draft horses a second chance

  • Happy Heart Happy Home began in 2011, with a horse who needed a second chance, and a girl who needed a best friend. And the rest is history.

  • Our never-ending goal is to give as many lost, broken souls a second chance at life as we can.  There are no days off and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • Every resident at our rescue has their own unique story. Read about their past and how they’re living their best lives in their forever home.

  • Our dedicated team of partners and volunteers are lovingly known as the “Honeybadgers.”

Who we are

Happy Heart-Happy Home was established in 2018 as a non-profit organization focused on rescuing and rehabilitating old work horses in their senior years of life.

While we offer sanctuary to animals of all kinds, ranging from cows, goats, sheep, and the like, our mission focuses on providing sanctuary to our gentle giants. We care for over 80 equines, the vast majority being of a draft breed that have been worked hard their entire lives, and dumped off at auction, destined for slaughter. These horses suffer from chronic ailments such as osteoarthritis, lymphedema, organ failure, and the most common, emotional trauma. When they come to us, they’re typically starved, neglected, and traumatized, and it is our mission to give these animals a peaceful sanctuary where we can heal their external and internal scars. Our team uses natural horsemanship techniques to form deep connections between horse and human, and in doing so we share their stories with you, creating an even wider network of love and stewardship. As our mission grows, we are exploring offering equine therapy to the public for those suffering from various degrees of emotional trauma and mental disabilities. Hoof in hand, we are creating a happier world for both gentle giants and humans alike.

more ways to help

While we do not have a volunteer program up and running just yet, there are still plenty of ways to help our mission!

  •  Follow @happyheart_happyhomesanctuary for news about volunteer updates.

  •  Share the stories of our residents with your friends and family.

  •  Make a recurring gift to support $2 Tuesdays for Hay, and $5 Fridays for feed.

  • Sponsor a horse’s care through the Guardian Program.

  •  Message us for more opportunities to help our sanctuary grow!

Contact Us

Have a question, or just want to connect? We are here for you, as you are here for us and the animals.

Please note, we are not a shelter and can not take in owner surrenders. If an animal in your care is in need of immediate medical attention, please contact a local veterinarian. The well-being of our residents is always our top priority and as much as we wish we could say “yes” to every animal in need, we must be responsible and make sure that with every rescue we take in, we are doing right by the animals already in our care.

The farm is private property and not open to the public. However, you’re invited to join us for visitor and volunteer days throughout the year. Make sure to follow us on social media @happyheart_happyhomesanctuary for updates.
